Pieces I'm entranced by at the moment Discussions relating to performance, interpretation, score preparation, musica ficta etc. Do other people similarly have pieces they want to gush about? Re: Pieces I'm entranced by at the moment And not so much currently entranced, but having reached the realisation that if the trance lasts long enough the object has become immovably part of one's life: Byrd's Plorans plorabit : the old boy supremely at the top of his game in every note, and coolly picking the most blameless Biblical texts to point out to James VI and Anne that they were merely mortal.
It defies categorization, between the liturgical and classical Latin libretto, the choral singing, and the rock taken broadly accompaniment. Maybe if Queen and Bach collaborated they would come up with something sort of similar, or perhaps if Jesus Christ Superstar took a different turn and ended up a few counties away.Limitations of biogas
I'm not really convinced it's great music, nor yet a great recording there are a few distinct lapses in the audio engineering, with nasty clipping on a few of the vocal takes. It is at least quite interesting and, at least for me, a wee bit addictive. Thanks for posting! I haven't sung that particular piece by Byrd and will bump it to the top of the stack.
Thanks for suggesting the Holst--I think I've sight-sung the Holst with piano only, though and it was a nice piece. Haven't met a piece by Holst I haven't liked. The Lithuanian work sounds intriguing.
I am curious if a collector I know has the recording I'll open a new topic on the subject. I'm having some trouble with finale and with some theoretical issues on the transcription. Can people suggest pieces that are available on CPDL? As examples, last year we sang movements from the Martin double-chorus mass, Elgar, Stanford, and a bunch of other nifty music. I'm trying to order the afore-mentioned Tides of Ocean and possibly Mantyjarvi's shipwreck piece if it can be condensed for 8v.
Would love to hear suggestions people may have for CPDL gems. The version written by Franz Schubert is widely sung at Catholic masses and other Christian religious ceremonies: and its text is a literal translation into Latin of the famous "Hail Mary" prayer. The text is said to be a direct quote from the Archangel Gabriel, when he descends from heaven and appears to the Virgin Marytelling her she has been blessed to carry the lord, Jesus Christwithin her womb.
Like most books in the New Testament, Luke was originally written in Koine Greek, a language common to the diaspora Christian communities in the eastern Mediterranean. The prayer's eventual evolution into Latin began nearly 1, years ago and likely took or more years to reach its current form. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. The piece gained practically no attention in Germany for many years. However, when Biebl was the head of choral programs for the Bayerischen Rundfunk Bavarian Radio he made a habit of inviting American choirs to come to Munich and sing on the radio and with other German choirs. One of these choirs was introduced to his Ave Maria and brought it back to the US, where it became increasingly popular.
When Chanticleer recorded it, it became a hit, not only in the US but in Germany too, which now considered the piece must be special as it was such a hit in America! Biebl did arrangements for other voicings, and the seven-part mixed choir arrangement is now probably the most popular. The text is unique in its conjoining of two sources. The first source is the thrice-daily devotional exercise called the Angelus in the Catholic Church.
It is cued by the ringing of the "Angelus" bell, sometimes referred to as the "Peace Bell. In place of the 'Ave Maria, Sancta Maria' from the Angelus text, Biebl has substituted the first part of the even more familiar text of the standard 'Ave Maria' prayer [Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, etc.

Good food, just like the American soldiers had. I was allowed to arrange a choir and songs for it. The Americans helped me to arrange concerts with choir, soloists and chamber music. He returned to Austria after the war, then moved to Germany, where he continued his work as organist, choirmaster, and teacher.
As director, he met and recorded many choirs from around the world, including the Cornell Glee Club, which brought the Ave Maria and some of his other pieces back to the United States for performance.
The Fascinating Backstory on Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria”
A member there had asked Biebel whether he would compose a piece for a chorus of his coworkers. Biebl agreed — and wrote the original Ave Maria for a double chorus of firemen. The work was made internationally famous by a Chanticleer recording several decades later, and is now available in many editions for a variety of vocal ensembles.
Biebl adapted the Angelus, a liturgy said three times daily in the Catholic Church. The Angelus includes three versicles, each followed an Ave Maria. Biebl chose to withhold the second part of the Ave Maria — the plea for Mary to pray for us now and in the hour of our death — until the end of the work. Franz Biebl Biebl wrote small, solidly constructed, highly inventive works primarily for church and community choruses.I assumed a common action for me that Franz Biebl was someone who lived several hundred years ago, as the music has a very old-ish feel to me.
And it certainly would never have occurred to me that:. Biebl was by no means a Classical or Romantic composer: he died in Let me see if I can untangle things a bit. Yes, you read that correctly. I never had the slightest idea about this, and I used to teach American history. Apparently as the war went on the prison facilities in Europe and Britain became too crowded, so as many a half a million captured soldiers were shipped to America.
The prisoners were treated well and put to work, mainly on farms, thus helping to fill the labor gap caused by so many American soldiers leaving the workforce. This was not forced slave labor; they were paid. So Biebl served his time untilwhen he returned to Germany and took up the post of choral director in the aforementioned hard-to-pronounce town.
We are told that:. He had in his church choir a fireman. It was common for companies, factories, police and fire departments, etc.

Think of all the fun it is to be a part of a performance! Biebl had moved on by this time to directing choral programs for Bavarian Radio, and he made it a practice to invite American choirs to perform in that venue. Why did Biebl do this? Was it because he had such good memories of being a POW in America? But anyway, the glee club started performing the piece when they got back home, its popularity started spreading, and then the group Chanticleer recorded it. On to the marching bands.
Why on earth would this slow, stately piece be a favorite for those groups?I see so many different arrangements, I would like to reference the original. And, is this still under copyright? Thank you, Gregory. Do you know Matthew Oltman? He is probably the person to talk to about the history of this piece, as he was in Iowa when the piece was brought over for a Region Choir and was with Chanticleer for over a decade.
